This rock was gathered just a few miles from home. It's known locally, along with other rock found in the spillings of coal mines, as "Brookwood Stone." In Chilton County, the composition of the gravels, derived from the Appalachian Mountains and distributed by the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers, is 10% chert and 90% Quartz. This one looks like a Feldspar and has a gazillion flecks of Quartz in it. Wowser! Dimensions: 31mm x 19mm x 9mm. Weight: 36.40 carats. This cabochon is in my personal collection; it is not available for sale. |
